I recently rented the movie, Defiance.  Here, is my review of the movie.

What I Liked About It?

It was a surprisingly good movie.  For a movie that was not promoted heavily at the box office, this was a good movie.  In this movie, Daniel Craig stars as one of two brothers who help lead a group Jewish refugees in Germany to safety and survival.

The story is solid without falling into the trap of having too many special effects or an unrealistic storyline.  Instead, the whole story is believable and avoids getting bogged down into possible political correct tangents.  Instead, it offers a true story of human struggle and ultimate triumph.

The acting was fairly solid throughout the movie.  All actors, men and women, did a good job of staying within their roles.  Considering the film content, it would be easy for this film to drift into the stereotypical male actors taking the lead and no strong performances by the ladies; however, this one had some strong female performances that helped strengthen the film.  Good to see this in my opinion.

What I Did Not Like?

This movie starts out slow.  Part of this is by design to set the story, but I personally do not care for stories that start slow.  Another challenge is the overall length of the movie is quite long compared to most movies.  What this means is I suggest you not make this movie the last thing you do before you go to bed.  If you do that, I think you will enjoy it more as you would otherwise be getting tired toward the end of the film.

Overall Review

A good solid movie rental that everyone will enjoy ranging from the general public to WWII buffs.  I give this movie extra points because it is based on a true story.  However, it would still be a solid film even without this.  I would grade it out as a B+.  Great for a summer movie flick and is a great alternative to some of the poor movies that have come out in the theaters already for 2009.  I would suggest first renting it; however, if you would like to just buy the dvd outright, you can through this link: Defiance DVD.
